DeWalt 20V MAX battery on a Bauer 20V tool

Neither brand lists the other as compatible, and the battery interfaces are reported to differ physically. The matching 20V label does not make them interchangeable.

Only a third-party adapter (DeWalt battery → Bauer tool) can bridge them. Neither DeWalt nor Harbor Freight supports this.
Adapters are reported as mechanical only; they do not make a battery chargeable on the other brand's charger.
DeWalt's warranty excludes damage from accessories or parts it has not approved.

Why the same voltage doesn’t help

A battery platform is a shape and a set of contacts first. The number on the label comes second.

DeWalt’s product page explains its label: a 20V MAX pack reads 20 volts at maximum initial voltage, measured without a workload, and 18 volts nominal. Harbor Freight’s Bauer listing shows a plain “20” with no nominal figure, so this article does not claim the two are electrically identical. Each brand lists its batteries for its own tools only: DeWalt for 20V MAX tools and chargers, Harbor Freight for “all Bauer cordless tools.” Neither names the other.

The physical details here come from independent write-ups, not the manufacturers. They say the sliding rails look alike, but the casing shape and contact positions differ, so a pack will not seat in the other brand’s tool. One hand-wired bench test also failed to run a DeWalt tool from a Bauer pack. That is consistent third-party evidence, not a lab result.

Own DeWalt tools

What an adapter changes

A third-party seller offers adapters for both directions. The points below are that seller’s own descriptions plus DeWalt’s published warranty terms. Kumia Labs did not test them.

What it changes

The fitting: one brand’s battery can physically sit on the other brand’s tool.
Direction is fixed per product. DeWalt battery on a Bauer tool and Bauer battery on a DeWalt tool are separate adapters.

What it does NOT change

Charging. The seller says neither adapter can charge a battery; charge it on its own charger.
Tool coverage. The seller lists at least one DeWalt tool, the DCV581H wet-dry vacuum, as not compatible.
Support. Neither DeWalt nor Harbor Freight endorses it, and DeWalt’s warranty excludes damage from parts it has not approved.

Trivia: DeWalt does list its own DCA1820, an 18V to 20V adapter. It stays inside DeWalt’s own tools, which is why it is supported and the cross-brand ones are not.
